“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’” Isaiah 6:8
The call of God is not for the special few, it is for everyone. Whether or not we hear God’s call depends upon our disposition.
It is important to note that God is not always going to single out a man or woman and say, “Now, YOU go.” More often than not, you will “hear” the call of God by continually studying his Word, praying, and meditating.
We see this in the case of Isaiah, God did not lay a strong compulsion on him or call him out directly; Isaiah was in the presence of God and he overheard the call and said, “Here am I, send me!”
If we let the Spirit of God bring us face to face with God’s will, we too shall “hear” something akin to what Isaiah heard, the still small voice of God; and with a willing spirit we too can say, “Here am I, send me!”
Isaiah was preparing himself to hear God’s call. He was spending time with God. God has a calling for every individual, but we have to be ready to hear. We will never know God’s call for us if we neglect to spend time with him. God is wanting us to spend time with him in his Word and in prayer.
Sometimes even when we hear the call of God we can let fear stand in our way. We may think others are more equipped for the task. However, you can’t change anyone else besides yourself, nor can you answer God’s call for anyone but yourself. So when God is asking, “Whom shall I send?” I pray that we all will speak up and say, “Here I am. Send me!”
